Glen Pomeroy, 83, passed away at his residence in Orlando, Florida on April 1, 2015, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A memorial service will be 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at the Lone Tree American Legion. Inurnment will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery. Glen was born in Emporia, Kansas, on February 24, 1932. At the age of thirteen, he contracted polio and was told that he would never walk again. With his own spirit of determination and the love and support of his family, he was able to walk with the aid of a leg brace and was among the first handicapped entrants in the Bix 7 Road Races in Davenport, Iowa.

Glen graduated from Washington University in Saint Louis. While a student, he was known for his scooter that he used to zip around campus and for the weightlifting awards that he earned, even competing against the student athletes.

After college, Glen began a 30-year career at ALCOA in Bettendorf, Iowa. While in Iowa, he met and married the love of his life, Joann Westfall. They made their home in Bettendorf, Iowa, and upon retirement, split time in Bettendorf and Port Charlotte, Florida, before a permanent move to Port Charlotte, Florida.

Glen had a beautiful bass singing voice and was a member of the church choir as well as the hand bell choir at Asbury United Methodist church in Bettendorf. He practiced the bells at home with different sized wooden spoons that represented the different bells that he used. He loved to sing Handel’s Messiah every year at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Glen was a member of the Punta Gorda United Methodist Church choir in Punta Gorda, Florida, as well as a barbershop group that sang at nursing homes in that area.

Glen is survived by his wife, Joann; his son John (Karen) of Waukee, Iowa; his daughter Ann Furstace of Orlando, Florida; grandsons Jacob Pomeroy of Falcon Heights, Minnesota, Joseph “Buddy” Furstace of West Point, New York, and Jackson Furstace of Orlando, Florida.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Katherine Pomeroy, his brother, Gary Pomeroy, his sister Karen Pfeffer, his aunt Helen Andrews, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law Coyt and Velma Westfall.
