Obituary for Martin Dale Veenker

Martin Dale  Veenker
Martin Dale Veenker, 77, of Coralville, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services for Martin will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Carol Kaalberg, Parish Life Administrator will preside. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457. Casket bearers will be John Wayne Herrington, Sr., John Herrington, Jr., Corey Shaw, Joe Galloway, David Staas, and Tony Escher. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 10, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Martin’s name at the funeral home. Martin Dale Veenker was born on January 12, 1935, in George, Iowa the son of Ralph Andrew Veenker Sr. and Bertha Mae (Martin) Veenker. Martin served with the United State Navy during the Korean Conflict. After the Navy, Martin received his Bachelors of Business from the University of Iowa. On January 19, 1981, Martin was united in marriage to Helen January 19, 1981. Martin worked on various Construction Projects and was later the Safety Manager on construction sites. Martin was a member of the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457 and enjoyed watching sports, entering contests and drawings on the computer, but most of all, Martin dearly loved to spend time with his family.

Martin will be deeply missed by his wife, Helen of Coralville; his children, Deb Shaw (Joe Galloway) of Lone Tree, Lori Haynes (Tee) of Dayton, Ohio, John Wayne Herrington, Sr. of Dunlop, Tennessee, John Herrington, Jr. (Heather Moore) of Coralville; grandchildren, Shiloh Kennedy (Craig) of Ooltewah, Tennessee, Joshua Herrington (Amanda) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Corey Shaw of Lone Tree; 14 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; brother Ralph Veenker Sr. of Davenport, IA.; 6 sisters, Catherine (Emil) Kutka of Topeka, Kansas, Mary Jo Haarsma of Des Moines, IA, Dorothy (Don) Staas of Cypress, TX, Rita Stockman of Schertz, TX and Linda Veenker and Cris Johnson of Redwood City, California; and his beloved dog, Hondo and fish, Opie.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law, Ann Veenker, brothers-in-law, Peter Dale Haarsma and Tim Stockman.
