Richard "Doc"  Elliott
Richard “Doc” Elliott, 89, of Lone Tree, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Pioneer Park in Lone Tree. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the Lone Tree American Legion. Cluster Coordinator, Carol Kaalberg, will officiate the services. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery at a later date. Immediately following the memorial services, full military rites will be provided by the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457. Following military rites, there will be a time of food and fellowship at the American Legion. Visitation for Doc Elliott will be held on Friday, April 18, 2014, from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Doc Elliott. Online condolences for the Elliott family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Richard Duane Elliott was born on October 6, 1924, on a farm in Miami County, Kansas, the son of Frank Arthur and Ruth Irene (Landes) Elliott. Doc attended Kansas State University for one year then volunteered for the draft in 1943. Doc was a member of the 8th Air Force during World War II, flying 26 missions as a crew member on B-17’s with the 360th Squadron. He served his country proudly from July of 1943 – November of 1945. On July 22, 1945, Doc was united in marriage to Grace Eileen Cooksey in Paola, Kansas. Doc then attended Kansas State University Veterinary College, graduating in 1950. Immediately following graduation, Grace and Doc moved to Lone Tree, joining the veterinary practice of Dr. D.F. Mossman and became a partner in June of 1951. From May 1951 – April of 1954, Doc operated a branch office of Mossman and Elliott in Riverside. From 1982 – 1989, Doc owned and operated the veterinary practice in downtown Lone Tree. In 1989, Doc sold his practice, but continued helping the new clinic with large animals until his full retirement in 1994.

Doc was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree, Iowa Charolais Association, Lone Tree School Board, Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce, various Veterinary Organizations, and a 50 member of the Lone Tree Masons and the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457. Doc was also a lifetime member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association and American Veterinary Medical Association. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing cards, having coffee with the boys in Lone Tree and dearly loved raising Charolais cattle and owning and restoring his Cushman 3-wheelers.

Doc will be deeply missed by his wife, Grace of Lone Tree; his children, Susan Elaine Elliott of Lone Tree, James Edward Elliott and wife, Jeanne of Chandler, Arizona and Cynthia Ann Eckoff and husband, George H. of Oceanside, California; six grandchildren, Mark, Scott, Ryan, Tyler, Kim and Richard; seven great grandchildren; one brother, John Elliott of O’Fallon, Missouri, and one sister Mary Godlesky of McColl, South Carolina.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Robert, and one sister Virginia.
