Mary Ellen York, 88, of Muscatine, passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at her home in Muscatine surrounded by her family and friends. Funeral services for Mary will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2014 at the New Hope United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. Following the interment a time of food and fellowship will be held at the New Hope United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to the KSDS, Inc. Assistance Dogs in Mary’s name. Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Mary Ellen Brown was born on November 26, 1925 in Louisa County, Iowa, the daughter of Clement Moore and Lelia Vail (Wilhelme) Brown. On February 10, 1946 Mary was united in marriage to Clair Edward York in Davenport. Mary retired from Stanley, Lande and Hunter law firm after 28 years as a legal secretary and 14 years as a paralegal. She was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church, a Brazilian embroidering club and several other sewing, quilting and knitting clubs. Mary with her husband was involved with Meals on Wheels and assisted with the SHIP Program. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren, great grandchildren and her dogs.

Mary will be deeply missed by her son, Randy York and his wife, Juana of Muscatine; three grandchildren, Travis E. York and wife, Kim of Atlanta, Georgia, Tyler J. York and wife, Jennifer of Grimes and Todd C. York and wife, Shanna of Johnston; great grandchildren, Charlotte, Genevieve, Adeline, Josephine, Ava, Eli and one on the way; her sister, Theresa Luethye of Witchita, Kansas and one special sister, May Roberts of Muscatine; and priceless friends and neighbors, Don and Nancy Martin.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clair in 2013; and one son, Lanny.
