Lewis Edward Dallmeyer was born December 22, 1921 on the family farm about 5 miles due East of Columbus Junction, Iowa on Highway 92. He was the 8th of 9 children born to Lewis Madison and Gertrude Blanche Dallmeyer. He had 4 brothers and 4 sisters. They are Francis Rolo (stillborn), Agnes Evelyn and Minnie Marie (both of whom died at the age of two months), Lola Gertrude (Michael) Tremont, Kenneth Madison, Helen Elizabeth (Leon) Thompson, Floyd Sylvester (died as a child at age 6) and Carl Fay Dallmeyer.
Lewis had one half-brother, Harlan Egebert “Cap” Dallmeyer, and one half sister, Lois Marguerite (James) Lowe, from his father’s first marriage to Theresa Weise.
Lewis was a life-long farmer in the community and a member of the Pleasant Grove Community Church, the Happy Farmer’s Coffee Club, Louisa County Farm Bureau, Louisa County Historical Society and the Lucky 13 Club. He also was an Indian Creek Cemetery board member and charter member of the Columbus Junction Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, playing Skip-Bo, traveling and spending time with his family.
Lewis attended Washington public school No. 1, in rural Concord Township, Louisa County, Iowa. He graduated from the eighth grade and went on to high school. He attended the 9th grade for one half the school year before leaving to help his father farm as his father had a disfigured right hand and was hard of hearing.
Lewis married Romelle Elizabeth Richardson March 1, 1941, at the parsonage of the Evangelical Church at Kahoka, Mo. They lived on the Dallmeyer farmstead until July 7, 2014, when because of advancing age, they moved to the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Columbus Junction. Romelle passed on December 30, 2014.
Lewis enjoyed farming and roaming the pastures and timber all year round. In the spring in search of mushrooms and in the summer and fall for a wild raspberry bush or Hickory nuts that fell here and there. His family and grandchildren were taught the beauty of nature and God’s wondrous gift of productive, fertile soil.
Lewis and Romelle enjoyed 73 years of marriage. They were blessed with two daughters, Sandra (Delbert) Rees of Columbus Junction, and Donna (Stephen) Henning of Davenport. They have five grandchildren and spouses: Jeff (Gerry) Rees of Walcott, Iowa, Jim (Melinda) Rees of Columbus Junction, Scott Henning (Michelle) of Davenport, Susan (Anthony) O’Hoara of Davenport, and Stefanie Henning of Portland, Ore. They also have seven great-grandchildren: Jared and John Rees, Max and Mackenzie Henning, Ashley and Shaun Powell and Benjamin Lewis O’Hoara.
In addition to his two daughters, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Lewis is survived by one brother, Carl (Helen) Dallmeyer of Washington, Iowa, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special mention to Dean Rickey for his continued friendship and to the staffs at Colonial Manor Nursing Home and Hospice of Washington County for their outstanding care.
