Elsie Lucille McNeill (Stout)
Elsie Lucille Stout McNeill, 92, of Muscatine, died on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015.
Mrs. McNeill was born in Washington County, Iowa, near Brighton on June 18, 1922, to Fern and Amos Stout. She was the eighth of nine children, who included Mary, Annie, Ethel, Amos, Ralph, Taylor, Donald and younger sister Laura Jeane.
Mrs. McNeill graduated from Brighton High School in 1940, and then attended teacher-training classes in Kirksville, MO. She started teaching in a one-room country schoolhouse that fall and eventually taught fourth grade in the Wilton Community Schools while finishing her bachelor’s degree at Marycrest College in Davenport. She retired from teaching in May 1987.
Elsie McNeill married D. Forrest McNeill on August 16, 1946, in Washington, Iowa. They had three children: Mary Clayton (Russell), now deceased, and two sons, Paul (Marcy) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Stephen (Jill) of Burlington, Iowa.
Her grandchildren include: Sara Clayton Butler (Craig) of Muscatine; Marc Clayton (Nikki) of Greenville, Virginia; Chad McNeill (Doreen) of Paso Robles, Calif., Cory McNeill of Colorado Springs, and Jared McNeill (Megan) of Keokuk, Iowa. Matthew Brown (Lindsay) of Colorado Springs, and Kevin Brown (Lauren) of Columbia, MO, also called Elsie “Grandma.” Her six great-grandchildren are Aelias Brown, Alana Brown, Jack Butler, Charlie Butler, Quincy Clayton and Logan McNeill.
Her husband Forrest, daughter Mary and all her siblings except Laura Jeane Fry of Kalona, Iowa, preceded Mrs. McNeill in death.
Mrs. McNeill was a dedicated member of Calvary Church who constantly and consistently showed her love for Jesus. She led the ladies’ Wednesday Bible study for many years until the week she died.
A celebration of life will be at Calvary Church, 501 West Bypass 61, Muscatine, Saturday, April 18 at 11am. The family will be available for greeting at the church at 10:30am and during the lunch following the service.
