Dorothy J. Vanatta, 83, of Muscatine, died on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Trinity Hospital in Muscatine. Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at the Sycamore Baptist Church, 511 Sub Van Buren Street, Muscatine. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date at the Muscatine Memorial Park Ash Garden. Following the Celebration of Life a time of food and fellowship will be held at the church. No visitation will be held. Dorothy’s request for cremation was facilitated by the Family Care Services Life Transition and Cremation Center. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Sycamore Baptist Church or Salvation Army of Muscatine in Dorothy’s name. Dorothy Jean Ryan was born on November 20, 1926 in Muscatine, IA, the daughter of Delmar and Hilma Pearl (Bartlett) Ryan. She married Joseph Preston Hart and to this union there were four children. Joseph preceded Dorothy in death. She later married Bernie Vanatta. He also preceded her in death. Dorothy retired from Maid-Rite after 29 years. She was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church, and she enjoyed reading, baking chocolate chip cookies, sewing and making ‘goose’ clothes, embroidering, crafting with plastic canvas, gardening and talking on the phone with her brother and sisters. Dorothy was well-known for saying, “What will be, will be.”

Dorothy will be deeply missed by her children, Donna Vander Horn and husband, Darrell of Muscatine, Clifford Hart and wife, Paula of Port Clinton, OH, Arnold ‘Arnie’ Hart and wife, Marian of West Liberty, Debbi King and special friend, Gene Foster of Lebanon, MO and Patti Morrison and husband, Merle of Letts; 10 grandchildren and several great and great-great- grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Ryan and wife, Shirley of Muscatine; two sisters, Verna Santos of Davenport and Maxine Powell of Muscatine; many nieces and nephews; several special neighbors; and special family, Alvin and Sandy Halpin and their girls, Christina and Kimberly, all of Muscatine.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and four brothers, Clifford, Ronald, Donald and Richard.
